And what could be more comforting or traditional during the holidays than the warmth and welcome of candles?   In fact, candles are perhaps the easiest way to create a lovely holiday atmosphere that is as magical as it is affordable.

Fragrance

75 percent of candles sold in the U.S. are scentedThe addition of fragrance to a candle formulation is commonplace in the United States. In fact, an estimated 75 to 80 percent of candles sold in the U.S. are scented. Candle manufacturers work closely with fragrance companies to develop scented formulations that are not only pleasing, but will burn safely and properly.

The aroma from a lighted scented candle is released through the evaporation of the fragrance from the hot wax pool and from the solid candle itself. Like unscented candles, properly-formulated scented candles will primarily produce water vapor and carbon dioxide when burned. The only difference is that a fragrance is also released with a scented candle.

Make Your Holidays Safe

Accidental candle fires increase four-fold during the holiday season, so all consumers to take special care with candles during the holidays.

Always keep a burning candle within your sight. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Be especially careful with flammable decorations or placing candles too close to Christmas greenery or Christmas trees.

Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and big enough to collect dripping wax.

Never place pillars or any candles directly on furniture, whether glass or wood, or directly on greenery.

Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.

Trim candlewicks to ¼ inch before lighting or re-lighting, and keep the wax-pool free of wick trimmings, dust, matches and debris at all times. Too-long wicks can cause uneven burning, smoking and dripping.
